CEO of Datawind, maker of the Aakash tablet, Suneet Singh Tuli, presented the device at the UN headquarters.<\/p>\n

Tuli gave a detailed presentation about the device and its potential for the education sector in India. Tuli said\u00a0“Frugal innovation isn\u2019t about creating an iPad killer, it\u2019s about creating an iPad for him”,\u00a0\u00a0pointing to a presentation slide of a lower-class man who\u2019s primary motivation is to receive an education. \u201cThis is not a straight commerce effort \u2014 it\u2019s an educational effort.\u201d<\/p>\n

Tuli said the tablet was a work in progress and it would go through significant improvements and innovation every six months.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis tablet seeks to empower the world\u2019s neediest and bridges the digital divide within our society,\u201d said Hardeep Singh Puri, India\u2019s permanent representative to the U.N. at the launch event. \u201cTo us, Aakash2 is the epitome of such high end innovation and excellence.\u201d<\/p>\n

The device will be made available to students at subsidised price of Rs. 1,130 by Indian Government. The Government purchases the same from DataWind at Rs. 2,263.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
