Buying a Watch? What to Consider

Whenever you are out strolling around the shops it is almost inevitable that something will catch your eye. A dress, a top brand watch or maybe something a little out of the ordinary will be tempting you to buy, and the allure will be hard to resist. But much as you think you want it, you need to stop and think before making that impulse purchase.

Take watches for instance.  Before you take that final step and get out the cash or your credit card, you ought to be asking yourself if it is a practical proposition. There are a couple of factors that you should think about first.

Cost. If the watch is an inexpensive fun piece, price probably won’t be much of an issue. More expensive designer and top brand watches, however, are a different matter. If you are running on a tight budget, splashing out on a high-end watch is not going to help your financial situation even though it might be excellent value for money and will last a lifetime. You must take time out to consider how often you will wear the watch and weigh that against its price to see if it is worth its price to you. If the equation says yes and it is not going to harm your finances, then it is fine to go ahead. Otherwise, it is best to wait a while until you can really afford it.

Colour and style. Unless you are fortunate enough to be able to buy a watch for a specific occasion and know exactly what you will be wearing it with, you most certainly have to consider the colour and style of any watches you plan to add to your collection. You should be asking yourself if that brightly coloured watch strap will match with anything in your wardrobe or will it mean that you need to get a new set of clothes too. And then there is the dial to consider. You might be able to change the colour of the strap but the watch face is permanent.

You also need to think about style. There are watches for all occasions. You will find sleek and elegant timepieces for those fancy evenings out alongside fun or glitzy watches just right for party time.  And then there are the tough and practical looking sports watches and the plainer watches for work. Before you buy your new watch, try to picture when you are going to wear it and what you can wear it with. If it doesn’t match anything you already have and a new outfit is not in your plans, then maybe you should resist temptation and give the watch a miss – for the time being at least.

Watches are not just for telling the time. They are fashion accessories that need to be selected as carefully as you would select your new dress or suit. So, think carefully before you buy, or that new watch could end up in its box in the back of your drawer.
